From my experiences with the gorgeous ex racer Toby the Teacake aka Thabaat
He pulls off a shoe as often as physically possible. Clearly this means I have to spend hours with him in the field, trying to find it. Plus we then have lots of cuddles because it hurts soooooo much…..poor old Teacake. Then more cuddles with the farrier (who he absolutely loves) when he comes to put it back on.
Similarly, we just love playing hide and seek with the fly mask. Another great excuse to have me in the field, entertaining him whilst looking for the elusive, pulled off mask.
Rugs, rugs, rugs. Because one just isn’t enough. Too cold and he’s shaking by the gate, too hot and he’s sweating and looking at me accusingly. Clearly, all a ploy for me to go to the yard five times a day to take them on and off to ensure he’s just right.
Another Toby favourite. Find a fence post, any will do, and contort yourself so that you can rub yourself or cut yourself just enough to warrant kisses, cuddles, baths and lovely expensive ointments.
And then there’s the stable. He has to walk round and round and round until everything is mixed together. So much fun with the added bonus that it takes me hours to muck out hence spending more time at the yard for cuddles and treats.
So, I’ve realised its all part of the plan, and because of, or in spite of all these things, if you’re lucky enough to own an ex racer, you’ll know there is nothing better than the love, the loyalty and the fun that comes from these extraordinary horses.
